400 Series Stainless Steel Castings

The 400 series stainless steel castings use higher carbon steel alloys than the 300 series. Primary properties of 400 steels over the 300 series are greater strength, resistance to oxidation, some are capable of heat hardening and polishing to mirror finishes suitable for surgical durability and sharpness. However, the 400s are less chemically corrosion resistant. Ferritic 400 alloys are magnetic, but more stress crack corrosion resistant making them common in industrial exhaust and commercial food equipment.

What is 400 Series Stainless Steel?
Shelmet’s Series 400 stainless steel castings are used in applications that don’t require the highest corrosion resistance of the 300 series, but have greater strength, magnetic properties, greater wear resistance and durability.

Common uses for 400 series stainless alloys include agricultural parts, high-stress drive shafts, hardware and surgical steels. They contain higher carbon content and poured for stain resistance, strength and lower cost durable parts.

400 stainless steel castings contain martensitic and ferritic microstructure alloys.

Ferritic stainless steels have higher amounts of chromium with minimal amounts of carbon. They are magnetic, cannot be heat hardened and were developed to be stress cracking and oxidation resistant. These 400 series steel alloys are used in exhaust systems and commercial washer systems.

400 series ferritic alloys that are most common are 409 and 436.
Common alloying elements are nickel, molybdenum, and titanium.

The 400 series stainless castings are less corrosion resistant than the 300 series, but the increased carbon provides greater strength and durability for service heavy equipment and other wear resistant parts.
